Free School Meals (FSM), Islington, London: Who qualifies and can get the benefits | Age Limit | Documents Required |How to apply ?
Islington Government offer financial support to help with the cost of childcare, grants for school-age children and advice for getting into work. It also provides free school meals to all School pupils in Islington.

What should a Child must have for Free School Meal Qualification?
If your child is eligible for free school meals, they’ll remain eligible until they finish the phase of schooling (primary or secondary) they’re in on 31 March 2025.
Your child may be eligible for free school meals, if you get any of the qualifying benefits of:
- Income Support
- Income–based Jobseeker’s Allowance
- Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
- Child Tax Credit, if your taxable income is within £16,190 and not entitled to Working Tax Credit
the guaranteed element of Pension Credit - support under Section VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
- Working Tax Credit run-on – paid for four weeks after you stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit
- Universal Credit – if you apply on or after 1 April 2018 and your household income within £7,400 a year after tax and before benefits
Children those who get paid these benefits directly and not through a parent or guardian, can also get free school meals.
The child may also get free school meals, if they get any of these benefits and your child is both;
- younger than the compulsory age for starting school (i.e, Children must get an education between the school term after their 5th birthday and the last Friday in June in the school year they turn 16.) and
- in full-time education.

How can a Nursery | Primary School Child get Free meals at School (FSM)?
A Child can get free school meals, if they attended in,
- Islington children’s centres and early years centres
- Children’s centre in an Islington primary school
- North Islington, Margaret McMillan or Kate Greenaway nurseries
- A primary school in Islington from the age of 3 (Full time).
- You must register on Citizens Portal to apply for free school meals for your primary school child.
Can Secondary School Students get Free school meals?
Some Islington Secondary School Student can get free meals, if they qualified. They may apply through the Islington Government Portal.

How did a Students in Further Education have Free meals?
Students aged between 16 and 18, who’re attending a further education funded institution can claim for free meals, if they have any one of the above mentioned qualification.
How to register for Free School Meals (FSM)?
- Visit Citizen Portal
- New Applicants must first need to register
- Enter your Email & Password
- Click “Login” for registration process
- After login, the applicant directed to the Citizen Portal Homepage.
- Select the ‘Free School Meals’ and start apply
- Click ‘Add Child’
- Give the Child details and address. It will be recorded.
- If the Child is already registered on the Citizen Portal, it will display as default.
- NOTE: If the applicant does not wish to make a FSM application for this child s/he must select the tab which will slide across from YES and display a NO.
- The summary of the application is displayed
- Select Continue
- Before accepting, applicant Declaration must be ticked.
- Click “Submit”

If the child is Eligible, the following message will be generated:

If eligibility could NOT be confirmed the following message will be generated:

Uniform grant | Eligibility | Cost | How to Apply in Islington?

Your child can get a one-off uniform grant if they:
- live in Islington
- are eligible for free school meals.
What Cost paid by Islington Government to get School Uniform?
- When your child moves to secondary school from year 6, they will get £150 from Government for school uniforms.
Suppose the child lives in another borough, even if they attend school in Islington, please contact your borough council for support.
If your child is currently in year 6, you previously registered for free school meals and they’re eligible under the national criteria, you’ll automatically receive the uniform grant.
If you haven’t registered for free school meals before, you must apply for this service using the Citizen Portal and choose the free school meals option. Please send the outcome assessment to FreeSchoolMeal@islington.gov.uk.
